The Easterly Kit got its name from Juan Cousteau's maiden voyage from Greenland to Svalbard where intense easterly winds made it almost impossible. The tale goes that the sea spoke to him on the roughest night of the trip after he finished off the grog. It said "Rough seas and changing winds will make a sailor sharp. But a hat with a pom-pom and matching beer koozie will one day save your ass." And it did—multiple times. Juan went on to become one of the greatest sailors and divers of all time, making some of the most grueling passages and risky underwater discoveries.
